Yesterday afternoon, Faith made her first major mess. I had no doubt that the terrible twos were quickening to our doorstep when I entered the kitchen to find all of the cabinets and appliances scribbled over with red permanent marker. Thank goodness we live in the days of Google! Within minutes I had four different methods for removing permanent marker from various non-porous surfaces and the crisis had been contained.
Little did I know that the tiny cyclone would soon strike again — this morning in fact. I had just returned from the grocery store and ushered her into the house. Then I returned to the minivan to bring in the groceries. It took several trips to get everything, so I would say I was gone for about five minutes. In that time, Faith removed her diaper and proceeded to poop on the living room rug! By the time I reached her, she had smashed it into the carpet with her feet as though she were crushing grapes to make wine. It had also been smeared across the coffee table and couch cushions. It required some discipline, an impromptu bath, some scrubbing and a little Febreze, but once again, order was restored – until this afternoon when she found a tube of Mommy’s lipstick.
I have to admit that by now my nerves were getting a little fried, but then I paused to think how fortunate I am if my biggest concerns of the day are these typical, everyday annoyances – the type that can be washed away, or cleaned up, or easily replaced – the kind that, like TV sitcoms, can be resolved in thirty minutes or less. Thank God for my little angelic terror and her big, beautiful, blessed mess!
